100 Years of Estonian Radio...A Journey Through Time
Join us as we celebrate a century of radio in Estonia!
On May 11, 1924, at 9:35 a.m., the first public radio test broadcast aired, featuring a concert by the mixed choir of Läänemaa Secondary School. This historic event took place at the Haapsalu postal office and long-wave telegraph station.
The dedicated crew for this groundbreaking broadcast included:
- E. Laurmann
- G. Liidemann
- E. Vidrikson
- J. Velling
- G. Punn
Utilizing a transmitter with a wavelength of 2,500 meters, the signal reached as far as Tallinn, Vändra, and Pärnu. The transmitter's mast antenna was a remarkable 90-meter-tall steel construction supported by insulators.
Later that year, on November 1, 1924, Raadio Ringhääling was established as a private company. By 1926, regular radio broadcasting had begun, paving the way for the rich radio culture we know today.
Congratulations to Estonia for celebrating this centenary in the air.
