Was an American inventor and artist, best known for his invention of Morse code and the electric telegraph. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Morse studied art in England before becoming a professor of art at the University of New York.
As technology developed, Morse became interested in electrifying communication and spent many years perfecting his system of telegraphy.
Eventually, in 1837, Morse built a prototype of the electric telegraph and began working on developing Morse code, a system of dot and dash signals that allowed messages to be transmitted over telegraph wires. In 1844, Morse sent the first public telegraph message from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, Maryland, with the words "What hath God wrought?".
In addition to his contributions to communication technology, Morse was an active and respected artist in his time. He was one of the founders of the National Academy of Design, and his paintings were exhibited in many important art galleries in the United States and Europe. Morse died in New York in 1872, and his legacy as one of the great inventors and innovators of the 19th century continues to this day.
